Bram: Pfff, kijk nou. Weer een rekening. Die zorgverzekering is echt duur elke maand.
Ugh, look. Another bill. That health insurance is really expensive every month.

Mieke: Ja, dat is een flink bedrag. Maar weet je dat je misschien geld terug kunt krijgen van de overheid?
Yes, that’s a considerable amount. But do you know you might be able to get money back from the government?

Bram: Oh? Hoe dan? Bedoel je de zorgtoeslag?
Oh? How? Do you mean the healthcare allowance?

Mieke: Precies! Dat is precies ons onderwerp voor vandaag. Goed dat je het zegt.
Exactly! That’s precisely our topic for today. Good that you mention it.

Bram: Ja, ik heb er weleens van gehoord, maar ik weet eigenlijk niet precies hoe het werkt. Wie betaalt dat eigenlijk?
Yes, I’ve heard of it, but I don’t really know exactly how it works. Who actually pays for that?

Mieke: Dat is een goede vraag. Zorgtoeslag is een financiële bijdrage van de overheid om je te helpen met de kosten van je zorgverzekering. Het is een tegemoetkoming.
That’s a good question. Healthcare allowance is a financial contribution from the government to help you with the costs of your health insurance. It’s a reimbursement.

Bram: Oké, een tegemoetkoming. En die vraag je dan aan bij de gemeente, of zo?
Okay, a reimbursement. And you apply for that at the municipality, or something?

Mieke: Nee, en dat is een belangrijk punt. Je moet zorgtoeslag aanvragen bij de Belastingdienst.
No, and that’s an important point. You have to apply for healthcare allowance at the Tax Authorities.

Bram: Huh, de Belastingdienst? Serieus? Ik dacht dat die alleen maar geld kwamen halen, haha.
Huh, the Tax Authorities? Seriously? I thought they only came to collect money, haha.

Mieke: Haha, ja, dat denken veel mensen. Maar ze regelen ook de toeslagen. Zorgtoeslag, maar bijvoorbeeld ook huurtoeslag en kinderopvangtoeslag.
Haha, yes, many people think that. But they also arrange the allowances. Healthcare allowance, but also, for example, rent allowance and childcare allowance.

Bram: Oké, interessant. En heeft iedereen daar dan recht op?
Okay, interesting. And does everyone have the right to it?

Mieke: Nee, er zijn een paar voorwaarden. De belangrijkste voorwaarde heeft te maken met je inkomen. Als je te veel verdient, heb je er geen recht op.
No, there are a few conditions. The most important condition has to do with your income. If you earn too much, you are not entitled to it.

Bram: Ah, logisch. Het is dus echt bedoeld als hulp voor mensen met een lager inkomen.

Mieke: Inderdaad. Verder moet je 18 jaar of ouder zijn en een Nederlandse zorgverzekering hebben. Als je aan die voorwaarden voldoet, kun je het aanvragen.
Indeed. Furthermore, you must be 18 years or older and have Dutch health insurance. If you meet those conditions, you can apply for it.

Bram: En hoe doe je dat, dat aanvragen?
And how do you do that, apply for it?

Mieke: Dat doe je online, op de website van de Belastingdienst. Daarvoor heb je je DigiD nodig om in te loggen.
You do that online, on the website of the Tax Authorities. For that, you need your DigiD to log in.

Bram: Natuurlijk, de DigiD. Die had ik ook nodig toen ik vorig jaar een paar keer naar het ziekenhuis moest. Ik wilde toen alleen maar rust, maar ik moest steeds online afspraken checken.
Of course, the DigiD. I also needed that when I had to go to the hospital a few times last year. I only wanted rest then, but I constantly had to check appointments online.

Mieke: Precies. Was dat vervelend?
Exactly. Was that annoying?

Bram: Nou, ik kon toen niet alles zelf doen omdat ik me niet goed voelde, maar gelukkig mocht mijn vriendin me helpen met inloggen. Het is wel handig dat alles op één plek staat.
Well, I couldn’t do everything myself then because I wasn’t feeling well, but luckily my girlfriend was allowed to help me log in. It is handy that everything is in one place.

Mieke: Ja, dat is het idee. Dus met diezelfde DigiD kun je ook je zorgtoeslag aanvragen. Het is belangrijk dat je het zelf doet, want het gaat niet automatisch.
Yes, that’s the idea. So with that same DigiD, you can also apply for your healthcare allowance. It’s important that you do it yourself, because it doesn’t happen automatically.

Bram: Oké, dus even een paar belangrijke woorden op een rijtje. De ‘zorgtoeslag’ is dus het geld dat je krijgt.
Okay, so just a few important words to list. The ‘zorgtoeslag’ is the money you receive.

Mieke: Klopt. En het is een ’tegemoetkoming’ van de ‘Belastingdienst’. Dat zijn echt de drie sleutelwoorden hier.
That’s right. And it’s an ‘allowance’ from the ‘Tax Authorities’. Those are really the three key words here.

Bram: En dat moet je zelf ‘aanvragen’. Duidelijk. Die woorden ga ik onthouden.
And you have to ‘apply for’ it yourself. Clear. I’ll remember those words.

Mieke: Heel goed. En dan een tip voor het examen. Er komt heel vaak een vraag: ‘Van wie ontvang je zorgtoeslag?’. De opties zijn dan bijvoorbeeld de gemeente, je zorgverzekeraar, of de Belastingdienst.
Very good. And then a tip for the exam. There’s often a question: ‘From whom do you receive zorgtoeslag?’. The options are then, for example, the municipality, your health insurer, or the Tax Authorities.
