Bram: Wauw, wat is het hier druk. En stil. Heel anders dan op ons kantoor, haha.
Wow, it’s so busy here. And quiet. Very different from our office, haha.

Mieke: Ja, dit is de universiteitsbibliotheek. Veel studenten gaan hier studeren voor hun tentamens.
Yes, this is the university library. Many students come here to study for their exams.

Bram: Universiteit… Wacht even, Mieke. Ik haal dat altijd door elkaar. Wat is nou precies het verschil tussen de universiteit en een hogeschool?
University… Wait a minute, Mieke. I always mix those up. What exactly is the difference between a university and a university of applied sciences?

Mieke: Goede vraag. Dat is een belangrijk onderwerp voor het KNM-examen. Kijk, na de middelbare school, dus na je havo of vwo, kun je in Nederland verder leren. Je gaat dan naar het hoger onderwijs.
Good question. That’s an important topic for the KNM exam. Look, after high school, so after your havo or vwo, you can continue studying in the Netherlands. You then go into higher education.

Bram: Hoger onderwijs, ja. En dat is dus hbo of universiteit. Ik vergeet het altijd. Op de middelbare school vond ik dat al een lastig verhaal.
Higher education, yes. And that’s HBO or university. I always forget. I already found that a difficult topic in high school.

Mieke: Geeft niet. Veel mensen weten het niet precies. Hbo staat voor hoger beroepsonderwijs. De school heet een hogeschool. Het is heel praktisch. Je leert echt een beroep, zoals fysiotherapeut, journalist of leraar.
That’s okay. Many people don’t know exactly. HBO stands for higher professional education. The school is called a university of applied sciences. It’s very practical. You really learn a profession, such as physiotherapist, journalist, or teacher.

Bram: Ah, oké. Dus als je iets wilt worden waarbij je direct met mensen werkt of dingen maakt, dan ga je naar het hbo.
Ah, okay. So if you want to become something where you work directly with people or make things, then you go to HBO.

Mieke: Meestal wel, ja. Je loopt bijvoorbeeld ook veel stage. Dan ga je alvast werken bij een bedrijf om te oefenen. De universiteit is anders. Dat noemen we ook wel wo: wetenschappelijk onderwijs.
Usually, yes. For example, you also do a lot of internships. Then you go to work at a company to practice. University is different. We also call that WO: scientific education.

Bram: Wetenschappelijk. Dat klinkt… theoretisch. Veel boeken lezen?
Scientific. That sounds… theoretical. Reading a lot of books?

Mieke: Haha, ja, heel veel boeken lezen. En je gaat leren om onderzoek te doen. Je leert kritisch en analytisch te denken. De lessen heten vaak een college, dat is een les in een grote zaal.
Haha, yes, reading a lot of books. And you learn to do research. You learn to think critically and analytically. The lessons are often called a ‘college’, which is a lecture in a large hall.

Bram: Poeh. En wat voor studies doe je dan op de universiteit?
Phew. And what kind of studies do you do at university then?

Mieke: Bijvoorbeeld geneeskunde om arts te worden, of rechten om advocaat te worden. Maar ook talen, geschiedenis, of psychologie. Het is echt gericht op de theorie en de wetenschap achter de dingen.
For example, medicine to become a doctor, or law to become a lawyer. But also languages, history, or psychology. It’s really focused on the theory and science behind things.

Bram: Oké, dus de hogeschool bereidt je voor op een beroep, en de universiteit meer op een carrière als onderzoeker of theoretisch specialist?
Okay, so the university of applied sciences prepares you for a profession, and the university more for a career as a researcher or theoretical specialist?

Mieke: Zo kun je het wel een beetje zien, ja. Een studie op het hbo duurt vier jaar en dan heb je je bachelor. Op de universiteit duurt een bachelor drie jaar.
You could see it that way, yes. an HBO study takes four years and then you have your bachelor’s degree. At university, a bachelor’s degree takes three years.

Bram: Huh, korter? Dat is wel een beetje gek.
Huh, shorter? That’s a bit strange.

Mieke: Ja, maar na die universitaire bachelor gaan bijna alle studenten nog een master doen.
Yes, but after that university bachelor’s, almost all students go on to do a master’s.

Bram: Oh ja, een master. Dat is dan die specialisatie, toch?
Oh yes, a master’s. That’s the specialization, right?

Mieke: Precies. Een master duurt één of twee jaar. Zowel je bachelor als je master sluit je af met een scriptie. Dat is een groot, zelfstandig onderzoeksverslag.
Exactly. A master’s takes one or two years. You conclude both your bachelor’s and your master’s with a thesis. That is a large, independent research report.

Bram: Een scriptie… pfoe. Ik ben blij dat ik dat niet meer hoef te doen. Dus, even kijken. Je hebt de hogeschool voor hbo, en de universiteit voor wo, wat wetenschappelijk onderwijs is.
A thesis… phew. I’m glad I don’t have to do that anymore. So, let’s see. You have the university of applied sciences for HBO, and the university for WO, which is scientific education.

Mieke: Helemaal goed.
Exactly right.

Mieke: Wat belangrijk is voor je examen: je krijgt vaak een korte tekst. Bijvoorbeeld over Fatima die verpleegkundige wil worden. De vraag is dan: gaat ze naar de hogeschool of de universiteit?
