Bram: Hé Miek, wat ben je aan het doen? Ziet er belangrijk uit.
Hey Miek, what are you doing? Looks important.

Mieke: Ah, ik help Yusuf, een van mijn cursisten, met het nakijken van zijn arbeidscontract. Hij is net begonnen met een nieuwe baan.
Ah, I’m helping Yusuf, one of my students, review his employment contract. He just started a new job.

Bram: Oh, wat goed! Maar een contract… ik heb die van mij jaren geleden ondertekend en er nooit meer naar gekeken, haha.
Oh, that’s great! But a contract… I signed mine years ago and never looked at it again, haha.

Mieke: Haha, ja, dat doen de meesten. Maar voor het KNM-examen moet je wel de verschillen kennen tussen de soorten contracten. Dat is een belangrijk onderwerp.
Haha, yes, most people do that. But for the KNM exam, you do need to know the differences between the types of contracts. That’s an important topic.

Bram: Oh ja? Oké, verfris mijn geheugen eens. Welke soorten zijn er ook alweer?
Oh really? Okay, refresh my memory. What types are there again?

Mieke: Nou, de drie belangrijkste die je moet kennen zijn: een vast contract, een tijdelijk contract en een nulurencontract.
Well, the three most important ones you need to know are: a permanent contract, a temporary contract, and a zero-hour contract.

Bram: Oké, een vast contract, dat klinkt duidelijk. Dat is voor onbepaalde tijd, toch? Zonder einddatum.
Okay, a permanent contract, that sounds clear. That’s for an indefinite period, right? Without an end date.

Mieke: Precies. Een vast contract geeft de meeste zekerheid. Je hebt een vaste baan en een vaste opzegtermijn. De werkgever kan je niet zomaar ontslaan.
Exactly. A permanent contract offers the most security. You have a steady job and a fixed notice period. The employer can’t just fire you.

Bram: Dat heb ik gelukkig. En een tijdelijk contract?
I’m lucky to have that. And a temporary contract?

Mieke: Een tijdelijk contract heeft een duidelijke looptijd. Bijvoorbeeld voor zes maanden of een jaar. Er staat een einddatum in het contract.
A temporary contract has a clear duration. For example, for six months or a year. There’s an end date in the contract.

Bram: En wat gebeurt er na die datum? Stopt het dan gewoon?
And what happens after that date? Does it just stop?

Mieke: Het kan stoppen, of de werkgever kan je een nieuw tijdelijk contract aanbieden. Na een paar tijdelijke contracten moet een werkgever je vaak een vast contract geven, als ze met je door willen gaan.
It can stop, or the employer can offer you a new temporary contract. After a few temporary contracts, an employer often has to give you a permanent contract if they want to continue with you.

Bram: Ah, oké. Ik heb vroeger ook een paar jaar met tijdelijke contracten gewerkt, voordat ik mijn vaste baan kreeg.
Ah, okay. I also worked with temporary contracts for a few years before I got my permanent job.

Mieke: Kijk, precies. En dan heb je nog het nulurencontract. Weet je wat dat is?
See, exactly. And then there’s the zero-hour contract. Do you know what that is?

Bram: Nul uren… Betekent dat dat je niet werkt? Dat klinkt ideaal, haha.
Zero hours… Does that mean you don’t work? That sounds ideal, haha.

Mieke: Nee, was het maar zo’n feest. Het betekent dat er geen vast aantal uren in je contract staat. Je werkt alleen als je werkgever je oproept. Je bent dan een oproepkracht.
No, if only it were that easy. It means there’s no fixed number of hours in your contract. You only work when your employer calls you in. You’re then an on-call worker.

Bram: Huh, echt? Dus de ene week werk je misschien twintig uur, en de volgende week nul?
Huh, really? So one week you might work twenty hours, and the next week zero?

Mieke: Inderdaad. Dit zie je vaak bij studentenbanen, in de horeca of bij bezorgdiensten. Het geeft heel weinig zekerheid, want je weet nooit hoeveel je gaat verdienen.
Indeed. You often see this with student jobs, in hospitality, or with delivery services. It offers very little security, because you never know how much you’re going to earn.

Bram: Wacht even, nu je het zegt… Ik heb vroeger in een café gewerkt en toen had ik ook zoiets. Dat was dus een nulurencontract. Nooit geweten.
Wait a minute, now that you mention it… I used to work in a cafe and I had something like that too. So that was a zero-hour contract. Never knew.

Mieke: Zie je wel? Het is goed om dit even op een rijtje te hebben.
See? It’s good to have this straight.

Bram: Oké, dus die drie namen zijn belangrijk. Wat waren ze ook alweer precies?
Okay, so those three names are important. What were they exactly again?

Mieke: Ja, let op. Dit zijn de belangrijkste woorden: het vaste contract, het tijdelijke contract, en het nulurencontract. Die drie moet je echt uit elkaar kunnen houden.
Yes, pay attention. These are the most important terms: the permanent contract, the temporary contract, and the zero-hour contract. You really need to be able to distinguish between those three.

Bram: En het gaat dus vooral om het verschil in… zekerheid?
And so it’s mainly about the difference in… security?

Mieke: Ja, precies. De hoeveelheid zekerheid is het belangrijkste verschil. Dat is vaak de kern van de examenvraag.
