Bram: Zeg Mieke, mijn nichtje gaat volgend jaar studeren in Amsterdam. Hartstikke leuk natuurlijk. Ze vroeg me laatst hoe ‘stufi’ precies werkt. Ik moest gewoon zeggen dat ik het niet meer weet. Haha, best gênant eigenlijk. Hoe regel je dat tegenwoordig?
Say Mieke, my niece is going to study in Amsterdam next year. That’s great, of course. She recently asked me how ‘stufi’ works exactly. I just had to say I didn’t know anymore. Haha, quite embarrassing actually. How do you arrange that nowadays?

Mieke: Haha, dat is een goeie vraag! ‘Stufi’ is de bijnaam voor studiefinanciering. En de organisatie die daarover gaat, heet DUO. Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs. Laten we hun website er even bij pakken, dan lopen we er samen doorheen. Kijk.
Haha, that’s a good question! ‘Stufi’ is the nickname for student finance. And the organization responsible for it is called DUO. Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (Education Executive Agency). Let’s pull up their website, then we’ll go through it together. Look.

Bram: Oh ja, DUO. Die naam ken ik nog wel. Dus, als je geld nodig hebt voor je studie, dan ga je naar DUO. Wat kun je dan allemaal aanvragen?
Oh yes, DUO. I still know that name. So, if you need money for your studies, you go to DUO. What all can you apply for?

Mieke: Precies. Je kunt verschillende dingen aanvragen. Sinds kort is er weer een basisbeurs voor iedereen. Daarnaast kun je een lening afsluiten. En je kunt een studentenreisproduct krijgen, voor gratis reizen met de trein en de bus.
Exactly. You can apply for several things. Recently, there’s a basic grant again for everyone. Additionally, you can take out a loan. And you can get a student travel product, for free travel by train and bus.

Bram: Een lening? Dus dat geld moet je later allemaal terugbetalen?
A loan? So you have to pay all that money back later?

Mieke: Ja, een lening moet je altijd terugbetalen, met rente. Maar de basisbeurs en het reisproduct zijn een ‘prestatiebeurs’. Dat betekent dat het een gift wordt als je binnen tien jaar je diploma haalt.
Yes, a loan always has to be repaid, with interest. But the basic grant and the travel product are a ‘performance grant’. That means it becomes a gift if you get your diploma within ten years.

Bram: Ah, dat is een belangrijke voorwaarde. Dus als je stopt met je studie, moet je alles terugbetalen?
Ah, that’s an important condition. So if you stop your studies, you have to pay everything back?

Mieke: Inderdaad. Dan wordt de beurs ook een lening. En kijk, hier staat het: je kunt ook een aanvullende beurs aanvragen. Die is voor studenten van wie de ouders minder geld hebben.
Indeed. Then the grant also becomes a loan. And look, here it says: you can also apply for a supplementary grant. That’s for students whose parents have less money.

Bram: Oké, dus je hebt de basisbeurs, de lening en de aanvullende beurs. En van dat geld ga je dan je boeken en je huur betalen? En het collegegeld?

Mieke: Ja, precies. Het collegegeld is het bedrag dat je elk jaar aan de universiteit of hogeschool betaalt. Met de studiefinanciering kun je dat betalen. Je kunt bij DUO ook apart geld lenen speciaal voor het collegegeld.
Yes, exactly. Tuition fees are the amount you pay to the university or college each year. You can pay that with student finance. You can also borrow money separately from DUO specifically for tuition fees.

Bram: Poeh, het is best een systeem. En hoe werkt dat aanvragen dan? Is dat moeilijk?
Phew, it’s quite a system. And how does applying work then? Is it difficult?

Mieke: Nee hoor, dat valt mee. Je gaat gewoon naar de website van DUO. Om in te loggen en de aanvraag te doen, heb je wel je DigiD nodig. Dat is heel belangrijk.
No, it’s not too bad. You just go to the DUO website. To log in and make the application, you do need your DigiD. That’s very important.

Bram: Oké, dus DigiD is weer de sleutel. Dat is bijna voor alles zo in Nederland, hè. Wacht, wat is nu precies het verschil tussen een lening en een gift?
Okay, so DigiD is the key again. That’s the case for almost everything in the Netherlands, isn’t it? Wait, what exactly is the difference between a loan and a gift?

Mieke: Dat is een heel belangrijk verschil, ook voor je examen. Een lening moet je altijd terugbetalen. Een gift mag je houden. De basisbeurs en de aanvullende beurs worden een gift als je je diploma haalt. Dat is de belangrijkste voorwaarde.
That’s a very important difference, also for your exam. A loan always has to be repaid. A gift you get to keep. The basic grant and the supplementary grant become a gift if you get your diploma. That’s the most important condition.

Bram: Helder. Dus lenen kost geld, een gift is gratis, mits je je diploma haalt.
Clear. So borrowing costs money, a gift is free, provided you get your diploma.

Mieke: Precies. Een tip voor het KNM-examen: je krijgt vaak een vraag over waar je moet zijn voor studiefinanciering. Het juiste antwoord is dan altijd DUO. Ze vragen ook vaak wat je nodig hebt om het aan te vragen. Dat is dus je DigiD.
Exactly. A tip for the KNM exam: you often get a question about where to go for student finance. The correct answer is always DUO. They also often ask what you need to apply for it. That’s your DigiD.

Bram: Oké, dus als ik op het examen een vraag zie over geld voor studeren, dan moet ik denken: DUO en DigiD. En onthouden dat je kunt lenen, maar dat een deel ook een gift kan worden.
