Bram: Kijk Mieke, wat een interessante tentoonstelling. Al die foto’s van vrouwen door de jaren heen. Wat een verschil in kleding, zeg.
Look Mieke, what an interesting exhibition. All those photos of women through the years. What a difference in clothing, I must say.

Mieke: Ja, prachtig hè? En het zegt zoveel over de maatschappij. Dit is eigenlijk een perfect KNM-onderwerp: de vrijheid van vrouwen om te dragen wat ze willen.
Yes, beautiful, isn’t it? And it says so much about society. This is actually a perfect KNM topic: the freedom of women to wear what they want.

Bram: Oh ja? Leg uit. Ik zie hier een foto uit de jaren ’50. Alle vrouwen dragen een lange rok. Dat was toen de norm, denk ik?
Oh really? Explain. I see a photo here from the 50s. All women are wearing a long skirt. That was the norm back then, I guess?

Mieke: Precies. De sociale norm was toen heel anders. Er waren veel meer ongeschreven regels over de kleding die vrouwen moesten dragen.
Exactly. The social norm was very different back then. There were many more unwritten rules about the clothing women had to wear.

Bram: En kijk hier, de jaren ’70. Een vrouw met een hele korte rok. En daarnaast eentje met een spijkerbroek. Dat was toen vast een grote verandering.
And look here, the 70s. A woman with a very short skirt. And next to her, one with jeans. That must have been a big change back then.

Mieke: Absoluut. Dat was onderdeel van de emancipatie. Vrouwen wilden zelf de keuze hebben. De vrijheid om te bepalen hoe ze eruitzien, zonder dat een man of de maatschappij dat voor ze beslist.
Absolutely. That was part of emancipation. Women wanted to have the choice themselves. The freedom to decide how they look, without a man or society deciding that for them.

Bram: En nu? Nu zie je alles door elkaar. Op straat zie ik een vrouw die een hoofddoek draagt, naast iemand met een heel korte broek. Mag dat allemaal gewoon?
And now? Now you see everything mixed together. On the street, I see a woman wearing a headscarf, next to someone with very short shorts. Is all that simply allowed?

Mieke: Ja, dat mag allemaal. Dat is de kern van de Nederlandse waarde van zelfbeschikking. Jouw lichaam, jouw keuzes. Dat geldt ook voor je kleding.
Yes, all that is allowed. That is the core of the Dutch value of self-determination. Your body, your choices. That also applies to your clothing.

Bram: Dus de stijl die je kiest, is helemaal aan jou?
So the style you choose is entirely up to you?

Mieke: Precies. Of je nu een hoofddoek draagt om religieuze redenen, of juist bijna geen kleding omdat het warm is… die vrijheid is er voor iedereen. En we verwachten dat mensen elkaars keuze respecteren, ook als je het zelf anders zou doen.
Exactly. Whether you wear a headscarf for religious reasons, or almost no clothing because it’s hot… that freedom is there for everyone. And we expect people to respect each other’s choices, even if you would do it differently yourself.

Bram: Huh, dat is wel interessant. Dus die vrijheid is eigenlijk de nieuwe norm geworden. Ik had daar nooit zo over nagedacht.
Huh, that’s interesting. So that freedom has actually become the new norm. I had never thought about it that way.

Mieke: Precies. De vrijheid van keuze is de norm. En dat is iets dat je voor je KNM-examen echt moet weten.
Exactly. Freedom of choice is the norm. And that’s something you really need to know for your KNM exam.

Bram: Oké, dus de woorden ‘vrijheid’ en ‘keuze’ zijn hier heel belangrijk. En wat bedoelde je net met ‘de norm’?
Okay, so the words ‘freedom’ and ‘choice’ are very important here. And what did you just mean by ’the norm’?

Mieke: Goede vraag. ‘De norm’ is wat de meeste mensen normaal of standaard vinden. Vroeger was de norm dat vrouwen een rok droegen. Nu is de norm dat je de vrijheid hebt om je eigen kleding en stijl te kiezen.
Good question. ‘The norm’ is what most people consider normal or standard. In the past, the norm was that women wore a skirt. Now, the norm is that you have the freedom to choose your own clothing and style.

Bram: En ‘respecteren’ betekent dan dat je die keuze van een ander accepteert, ook al is het niet jouw stijl?
And ’to respect’ then means that you accept someone else’s choice, even if it’s not your style?

Mieke: Exact. Je hoeft het niet mooi te vinden, maar je moet de keuze van de ander respecteren.
Exactly. You don’t have to find it beautiful, but you must respect the other person’s choice.

Mieke: Een tip voor je examen: je krijgt vaak een foto te zien met een paar vrouwen. Eén draagt een hoofddoek, een ander een spijkerbroek, en weer een ander een korte rok. De vraag is dan: wat is de regel in Nederland?
A tip for your exam: you often get to see a photo with a few women. One is wearing a headscarf, another jeans, and yet another a short skirt. The question then is: what is the rule in the Netherlands?

Bram: Ah, en dan moet ik het antwoord kiezen dat iets zegt over vrijheid.
Ah, and then I have to choose the answer that says something about freedom.

Mieke: Precies. Het juiste antwoord is altijd dat vrouwen de vrijheid hebben om zelf hun kleding te kiezen.
Exactly. The correct answer is always that women have the freedom to choose their own clothing.

Bram: Oké, dus als ik zo’n vraag op het examen krijg, moet ik onthouden: in Nederland mogen vrouwen zelf beslissen welke kleding ze dragen. Of dat nu een hoofddoek, een jurk of een spijkerbroek is. De keuze is vrij.
Okay, so if I get such a question on the exam, I need to remember: in the Netherlands, women are allowed to decide for themselves what clothing they wear. Whether that’s a headscarf, a dress, or jeans. The choice is free.
