Bram: Zo, het is hier wel druk in deze taalschool. Ik zie overal posters hangen: ‘Start nu met je inburgeringscursus!’ Wat houdt zo’n cursus nu eigenlijk precies in? Ik dacht altijd dat het alleen Nederlands leren was.
Well, it’s quite busy here in this language school. I see posters everywhere: ‘Start your integration course now!’ What exactly does such a course entail? I always thought it was just about learning Dutch.

Mieke: Haha, dat denken veel Nederlanders. Maar het is veel meer dan alleen taal. De taal is natuurlijk de basis, maar de hele cursus bereidt je voor op het inburgeringsexamen.
Haha, many Dutch people think that. But it’s much more than just language. The language is, of course, the foundation, but the whole course prepares you for the integration exam.

Bram: Oké, en wat ga je dan allemaal leren?
Okay, and what all will you learn then?

Mieke: Nou, kijk. De meeste mensen die naar Nederland komen, hebben een inburgeringsplicht. Dat betekent dat ze verplicht zijn om in te burgeren. Ze gaan dan naar een taalschool zoals deze.
Well, look. Most people who come to the Netherlands have an integration obligation. That means they are obliged to integrate. They then go to a language school like this one.

Bram: Logisch. En dan beginnen ze met Nederlands.
Makes sense. And then they start with Dutch.

Mieke: Precies. Het belangrijkste is het leren van de Nederlandse taal. Cursisten werken toe naar een bepaald taalniveau. Meestal is dat niveau A2 of B1. Ze gaan dus lessen volgen voor lezen, luisteren, schrijven en spreken.
Exactly. The most important thing is learning the Dutch language. Students work towards a certain language level. Usually that’s level A2 or B1. So they attend lessons for reading, listening, writing, and speaking.

Bram: En daarnaast dus KNM, wat wij nu aan het ‘studeren’ zijn.
And besides that, KNM, which we are currently ‘studying’.

Mieke: Inderdaad. KNM, Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij, is een heel belangrijk onderdeel. Je leert over de geschiedenis, de politiek, de gezondheidszorg, onderwijs… eigenlijk alles wat je moet weten om hier te kunnen wonen.
Indeed. KNM, Knowledge of Dutch Society, is a very important component. You learn about history, politics, healthcare, education… basically everything you need to know to be able to live here.

Bram: En wat nog meer? Ik hoorde laatst ook iets over ONA.
And what else? I also recently heard something about ONA.

Mieke: Klopt. Dat is ONA: Oriëntatie op de Nederlandse Arbeidsmarkt. Dat is een module die je voorbereidt op het vinden van werk in Nederland.
That’s right. That is ONA: Orientation on the Dutch Labor Market. That’s a module that prepares you for finding work in the Netherlands.

Bram: Huh, echt? Wat leer je daar dan? Hoe je moet solliciteren?
Huh, really? What do you learn there then? How to apply for a job?

Mieke: Ja, onder andere. Je gaat leren hoe je een goed cv maakt, waar je vacatures kunt vinden en hoe een sollicitatiegesprek hier gaat. Heel praktisch dus.
Yes, among other things. You’ll learn how to create a good CV, where you can find job vacancies, and how a job interview works here. Very practical, then.

Bram: Dat is wel slim eigenlijk. Dus je hebt taal, maatschappij en werk. Is dat het?
That’s quite clever, actually. So you have language, society, and work. Is that it?

Mieke: Bijna. Er is ook nog het participatieverklaringstraject. De PVT. Dat is een verplicht onderdeel over de kernwaarden van de Nederlandse samenleving. Denk aan vrijheid, gelijkwaardigheid en solidariteit.
Almost. There’s also the participation declaration trajectory. The PVT. That’s a mandatory component about the core values of Dutch society. Think of freedom, equality, and solidarity.

Bram: Participatie…verklaring? Wat een woord.
Participation…declaration? What a word.

Mieke: Ja. Na een aantal workshops onderteken je een verklaring dat je die waarden respecteert. Pas als je al die onderdelen hebt afgerond, ga je het volledige inburgeringsexamen doen.
Yes. After a number of workshops, you sign a declaration that you respect those values. Only when you have completed all those components will you take the full integration exam.

Bram: Wauw. Dat is een flink pakket. Ik wist niet dat het zo uitgebreid was.
Wow. That’s quite a package. I didn’t know it was so extensive.

Mieke: Zeker. De bedoeling is dat je na de inburgeringscursus echt zelfstandig kunt meedoen in Nederland.
Certainly. The intention is that after the integration course, you can truly participate independently in the Netherlands.

Bram: Oké, dus even voor de duidelijkheid. Je hebt KNM, dat is kennis over de maatschappij. En je hebt ONA, en dat gaat specifiek over werk zoeken. Dat zijn twee losse onderdelen?
Okay, so just for clarity. You have KNM, which is knowledge about society. And you have ONA, and that’s specifically about job searching. Are those two separate components?

Mieke: Precies. KNM is Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij en ONA is Oriëntatie op de Nederlandse Arbeidsmarkt. En dan heb je nog de participatieverklaring. Dat zijn de drie onderdelen naast de taalexamens.
Exactly. KNM is Knowledge of Dutch Society and ONA is Orientation on the Dutch Labor Market. And then you also have the participation declaration. Those are the three components in addition to the language exams.
