The Real Science of Sport Podcast is de podcast voor iedereen die wil weten wat er wetenschappelijk klopt van alles wat er in de sportwereld wordt beweerd. Sportwetenschapper professor Ross Tucker en sportjournalist Mike Finch fileren mythes, praktijken en controverses uit de wereld van de sport. Geen borrelpraat, maar onderbouwing.
De sportwereld zit vol aannames. Over training, herstel, voeding, materiaal en talent doen de wildste verhalen de ronde, en lang niet alles daarvan overleeft een kritische blik. In deze podcast duiken Tucker en Finch in het meest recente onderzoek en leggen ze uit wat de wetenschap wel en niet kan zeggen over prestaties in de sport.
De onderwerpen komen uit de volle breedte van de sport: van atletiek tot rugby, en van voetbal tot wielrennen. Daarbij halen de makers lessen uit de profsport naar boven en spreken ze in exclusieve interviews met vooraanstaande sportexperts van over de hele wereld. Ook controverses gaan ze niet uit de weg; juist de discussies waar de meningen over botsen, worden hier langs de wetenschappelijke meetlat gelegd. De voertaal is Engels.
Denk aan vragen als: welke trainingsmethoden werken echt, wat weten we over herstel en blessurepreventie, en hoe zit het met de discussies die de sportwereld verdelen? Tucker en Finch nemen de tijd om de nuance op te zoeken. Ze vertellen niet alleen wát het onderzoek zegt, maar ook hoe sterk het bewijs is en waar de wetenschap nog geen antwoord op heeft. Daarmee is de podcast een verademing in een tijd waarin iedere influencer een mening heeft over sport en prestaties.
De podcast wordt gemaakt door twee mannen die elkaar goed aanvullen. Ross Tucker is een internationaal gerenommeerd sportwetenschapper die de onderzoekskant voor zijn rekening neemt. Mike Finch is een doorgewinterde sportjournalist die weet welke vragen luisteraars hebben en de wetenschap vertaalt naar begrijpelijke verhalen. Samen zorgen ze ervoor dat de afleveringen inhoudelijk stevig zijn zonder droog te worden.
Deze podcast is er, zoals de makers het zelf zeggen, voor iedereen die van sport houdt. Fanatieke sporters die hun training willen baseren op feiten in plaats van fabels halen er direct toepasbare inzichten uit. Coaches en begeleiders vinden er de nieuwste onderzoeksresultaten. En ook wie vooral sport kíjkt, krijgt context bij de discussies die na elke wedstrijd oplaaien. Enige affiniteit met Engels is handig, want de afleveringen zijn Engelstalig.
